Unfair Conceptions of Expertise In addition to feelings of disvalue and disrespect and their burden of feeling compelled to refute stereotypes, African American graduate students may also become frustrated by their classmates’ and professors’ expectation that they should be authorities solely on African American issues (Ford, Milner, & Sims, in press). African American graduate students are often looked to for responses to the “Black” issue—matters that may or may not be consistent with their areas of interest and expertise.
Clearly, such reactions are stressful for African American students. To be clear here, I strongly believe that African American students (and students in general) should be given opportunities to share the authority and perceptions they have derived as a consequence of their experiences. In hooks’s (1994) words: As a teacher [educator], I recognize that students . . enter classrooms within institutions where their voices have been neither heard nor welcomed, whether these students discuss facts—those that any of us might know—or personal experience.
Aditionally, a significant decrease in the number of doctorates awarded to African American males has also predominated. In 1997, there were 41,368 recipients of doctoral degrees. Out of that total number, only 1,656 were awarded to African Americans. African American females received 1,088 (65%) and African American males earned a mere 568 (35%) of all doctorates awarded to African Americans in 1997. Twenty years earlier, African American men had earned 61% of the total number of doctorates (ACE, 2002b).
