If the uniform aperture phase restriction is removed there is no theoretical limit to the gain of an aperture antenna. Such severe bandwidth limitations, tolerances and matching problems are usually encountered, however, that supergain arrays or aperture antennas are rarely used. A supergain ratio for an aperture can be defined by relating its radiative and reactive power to its radiation pattern function. This relationship was derived by Borgiotti (1963, 1967), Collin and Rothschild (1963) and Rhodes (1966).

Later it will be shown to provide the highest gain of all in-phase distributions; in this sense it is an ideal distribution. In most real distributions the field decreases towards the aperture edges, resulting in broader beams and lower sidelobe levels. e. 1. Such patterns may be useful for antennas in guiding or tracking on a pattern null, but otherwise are rarely used. Similar distributions may also appear as the cross-polarised fields of a paraboloidal reflector. It is understood, however, that only radiation in the forward hemisphere can be calculated by the method and that if the boundary conditions in the aperture plane are not satisfied errors in the calculated field increase near the boundary. Generally the accuracy of the result decreases as the angle off the beam axis increases.
