Sean McConnell’s (2008) proposal is to argue not against the identification of the state of mind that refers to cognition with free harmony, but rather against the claim that free harmony necessarily produces pleasure. McConnell rejects the identification of displeasure with the concept of disharmonious relation because he believes that such relation is inconsistent with the concept of free play.

He suggests three such sources: an object is ugly because, either (i) its sensory elements are displeasing (such as taste, touch, simple sound or color), (ii) it is displeasurable because it is in disagreement with our moral standards, or (iii) an object’s form is displeasurable, however not in itself, but rather because it is in disagreement with the concept of a purpose, that is, with the idea of how an object’s form should look.
