One upshot of Schlegel’s view of philosophy is that our knowledge claims will never attain a necessary, systematic unity. 88 Schlegel emphasizes change and endorses a “genetic” or “synthetic” method. This, I argue, is an essentially historical method in which change is primary. In order to clarify this, I present Schlegel’s critique of paradigms of philosophy that rely upon the concept of the ‘thing’ as something ahistorical and static and discuss how this ties into his claims regarding the Wechselerweis.

It is in this sense that Schlegel’s seemingly lighthearted characterizing of Kant as the Spürhund and Fichte as the Jäger of philosophy takes us to a deeper philosophical point regarding what philosophers are able to achieve: the idealists go after and believe they have hunted down the Absolute, whereas the early German Romantics are convinced that we can be on the trail of the Absolute and get ever closer but never hope to capture it. This point has crucial ramifications for their view of knowledge and of truth.

Richard Rorty is a well-known, even infamous, figure, who is well aware of the effects that reductionist views of philosophy have had upon the development of the field.
