Its two boilers have been tested at 90 bars. The steam supplies a 64 MW condensation turboalternator unit comprising a controlled-pressure extraction system (20 bars), which can supply the heating network with up to 150 tonnes of steam per hour. In an average year, these giants supply more than 2 million tonnes of steam to the heating network and 120 10 kWh to the electricity network, which represents a saving of 180,000 tpe per annum. Between seasons and especially in summer, the combined production of electricity and steam prevents the loss of calories which would not be used in the heating network.

At present in the USSR about lOOO CHP plants are operating or under construction. Their total installed electric capacity exceeds 63 million kW. that is about one-third of the capacity of all thermal power stations_in the country. The annual heat release from these plants exceeds 4 billion GJ /_ 5/. The development of CHP production is continuing^_ Powerful nuclear CHP plants of electrical capacity of 2 million kW and more (_ TJ are being designed. In general, CHP production in the USSR is advantageous at heat loads of 2000 GJ/h and higher.

However, district heating has been largely neglected until the recent widespread realisation that low-temperature heat is a separate product with a specific market potential, specific technologies and specific problems of evaluation. High fuel prices, which are expected to increase even further, favour district heating as a system based on the principle of major energy economy in the supply system. Prospects of increased reliance on coal in the production of power and heat increase the pollution problems.
