This complete interdependency between intellect and sensibility relegates human knowledge to phenomena, that is, to representations of the things not as they are in themselves, but as they are perceived by our senses. This sphere of 2 1 . Kant, Opere, Vol. 4, p. 286 (Critique of Pure Reason). 34 representation, the only one which can be grasped by the human intellect, is characterized by being determined by space and time as sensory forms of intuition. But if, according to Kant, the intellect can only grasp the phenomenal world, reason aims at the grasping of transcendental ideas such as the soul, the totality of the world and God.
Yet, the analysis of aesthetic experience (both active and passive, as producer and spectator) in Adorno assumes another fundamental critical value. In Adorno, in fact, analyzing art in this manner is only partial, since it considers the aesthetic experience from a subjective point of view. In other words, when we commonly talk about aesthetic experience we might assume that there is a subject who is (more or less autonomously) either creating or contemplating art. For Adorno this is a wrong assumption.
The substitution of will for reason in the role of man's essential characteristic is probably the most innovative aspect of Schopenhauer's theory. The same attributes that the philosophical tradition had previously assigned to rationality, the ultimate basis of actions, are in fact transposed by Schopenhauer to this impulsive force. All philosophers have erred in this: they place the metaphysical, the indestructible, the eternal element in man in the intellect. It lies exclusively in the will, which is entirely different from the intellect, and alone is original.
