Typically Select-Where statements with an optional OrderBy clause. We chose to base our query language on SQL since it is a widely popular and easily learned, yet powerful and precise way to specify queries. A query specifies result entities and their attributes about which information is demanded. In SQL, this translates to table and column names in the Select clause. Constraints on the attribute values are defined in the Where clause. They may be based on literal values or entity attribute values.
The query schema is directly used as a registry query for suitable data sources. It is always regarded as one single fragment since it is feasible to assume that all the entities in the query are meant to be interlinked. The query fragment is compared to the patterns in the catalog, the similarity being calculated by the number of elements that can be regarded as equal. Currently, the determination of equality is based on a linguistic matching. In case of a similarity greater than zero, the data sources referenced by a pattern can contribute to answering the query and are selected as candidate sources for further processing.
Taxonomy of approaches to data integration Obviously, source-driven mediation cannot cater for user demands on the part of queries and is therefore no suitable basis of a demand-oriented data provision service. Target-driven mediation facilitates integration systems that best possibly support user demands as expressed in the predefined global schema. Static integration systems with automatic mediation can maintain this support in cases of changes to their data base, e. g. by repeating the mediation in the event of schema changes or data sources becoming unavailable.
